[Character name] Tohru Honda
[Age] Never stated but by looks of it, she's around 17-18 years old
[Canon] Fruits Basket
[Point in time taken from canon] Chapter 122, after she fell off the cliff and told Kyou that everything will be all right before losing consciousness.

[Background]

Wiki'd Her background is listed under "Life with the Sohmas".

[Personality]

A cheerful and optimistic individual like Tohru Honda would be considered really odd in this day and age, especially with the tragedy of her mother dying in a car accident. She is polite to a fault, speaking rather formally for someone her age. She is extremely kind-hearted as well. Tohru couldn't even bring herself to act like the mean stepsister when their class was rehearsing for their Cinderella play that was going to be presented for Kaibara High's cultural festival. She also cried after her mother told her the story of the twelve zodiacs, claiming that she wished to be born in the year of the cat instead.

Probably because of the way she spoke and acted, Tohru was bullied a lot when she was younger. A really cruel game of Fruit Basket cemented what an oddball she is. While everyone was assigned a fruit, Tohru was the only one who got "rice ball" (she even thought that it sounded delicious ;;). Every child in her class was running around and having fun, except for Tohru. She sat in her chair, waiting patiently for someone to yell out "Rice ball!" and let her join the game. But it never came. She realize it was because "A rice ball doesn't really belong in a fruit basket.". This experience made her sympathize with the tiger of the zodiac, Kisa, who was also subjected to bullying.

Many people have noticed her tendency to be selfless (and often commented that she shouldn't shoulder everyone's burdens). When her grandfather's place was going through some renovations, Tohru opted to stay in a tent instead, getting used to the dirt, grime and bugs rather than be a burden to her best friends Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima. She also got a part-time job as a cleaning lady in order to pay her school tuition so that her grandfather wouldn't be bothered by it.

One of the things that a zodiac member goes through is the feeling of being alienated and isolated because of the curse. No matter which of the twelve members Tohru was speaking to, she would always treat them with the same warmth and gentleness that something akin to what a mother would do (Yuki and Rin have both been unconsciously drawn to this side of Tohru). She would patiently listen to their troubles and struggles. She offers them words of comfort, imparting wisdom she had heard once from her mother Kyoko. She had told Yuki once that people were not born kind, that you had to learn about how to be when you are growing up.

Tohru is the kind of person who sees the good in everyone and trusts them completely. Unfortunately, this trait makes Yuki and Kyou worry over her. They both mentioned once that Tohru was indeed a type of person who would let a burglar in, serve him some tea and listen to his entire life story. She is also a regular victim of believing Shigure and Hatsuharu's jokes without fail. Kyou, Yuki, and sometimes Hiro would have to be the ones to point out that what Shigure and/or Hatsuharu going on about was a joke and not to be taken seriously.

Kyoko was quite literally Tohru's world prior to the series. After Kyoko died, Tohru swore that she will always think of her (carry her picture around...) and she also promised to graduate from high school because it was her mother's dearest wish for Tohru. The girl definitely held Kyoko in the highest regard, often quoting her mother's nuggets of wisdom and passing them to her friends and eventually, the Sohma's as well.

At the point where I'm taking her, Tohru became devastated when she couldn't answer Rin right away who was the most important person to her. It should have been simple. "Mom" But this was starting to change when Tohru was starting to develope feelings for Kyou. In a way, Tohru's vow to always remember Kyoko was her clinging to the past. She was afraid of forgetting but Tohru came into terms with it, realizing that Kyoko would have wanted her to move on and "fall in love with somebody else". coughcoughKyoucoughcough

[Abilities]

Tohru is a normal girl. She is, however, really good at cooking and cleaning. She also has a knack for knowing what to say to people when they are in need of comfort and support.

[Other important stuff]

Tohru speaks rather formally ("keigo" in Japanese), a habit she picked up from her late father when she was three but she is speaking it incorrectly. Katsuya's family kept saying in his funeral that Tohru never really resembled her father and that Kyoko started to neglect her because of her mourning for Katsuya's passing. Tohru started to speak like this in hopes of getting her mother's attention. And that maybe now she resembled her father just a little bit. She also worries over people who have minor illness. This stems from her father dying from pneumonia, which was thought to be a simple cold at the time.

[Sample post]

[First Person]

If you could go back home, would you? Why or why not?

If I could... go home? [Shock was clearly written on her face. Tohru sobers up a few minutes later. A tiny, sad smile can be clearly seen.] I would love to. I must have made Hana-chan, Uo-chan, Shigure-san, and a lot of people worry about me. But maybe... Maybe it would be better if I stayed here.

Someone comes to you to ask for the time. How would you respond?

Oh! I would check my watch and give them the correct time! I hope that even in a small way, that it will help them through their day somehow.

You're asked to take someone out for a date. Do you agree? If so, describe what you would do. If not, tell why.

W-w-wha--A D-D-DATEEEE?! Oh, I c-couldn't possibly! I'm not worthy to be the one who--! O-oh my! [Sorry. Tohru Honda has become too flustered to even finish answering this question. Next~]

What is more important to you: having friends or living on your own? Why?

I have to confess that I choose to live in a tent because I didn't want to impose on Uo-chan and Hana-chan. But they're wonderful people. I'm so lucky that I've had the privilege to meet them. I feel the same way when I met the Sohma family... One by one.

There is a cake in the rain. What do you do?

Oh no! That's such a waste! Maybe there's still a way to save the cake somehow!

Someone is trying to rob you! What do you do?

E-EH?!! I-I-I'm sure that Mr. Burglar has a good reason why he has to steal from us! I-If we could just sit down and talk about it, it will clear this misunderstanding right away! [... dear god. Yuki and Kyou were right. orz]

[Third Person]

As much as she willed it, as much as Kyou urged her, Tohru couldn't stop the tears falling from her eyes. Even as the two of them climbed off the roof and made their way back to Shigure's house, a few stray tears keep rolling down her cheeks. She honestly had no idea what came over her. All Kyou said was that he would give her support if she found herself a boyfriend. That was all he said and it was a kind and considerate thought. It had touched Tohru in a way she never thought it would. And yet, she felt something inside her tighten and twist, like the pain was suddenly too much to bear. Enough for it to feel like it would shatter into pieces if she does nothing in order for it to stop.

The pair had already past the living room when Tohru stopped dead in her tracks, letting out a shaky breath while using her pajama sleeves to wipe away the remaining tears. She tried to laugh it off and smile, saying that that maybe she was just that exhausted from the trip she took earlier in the day. Kyou couldn't know that she sought out Kureno Souma at the Main House. She knew he couldn't find out about her acting on her foolish impulse. Even though she did it on the behalf of Arisa.

"I-I'm so sorry Kyou-kun," she said, shaking her head. "You already wished for me to stop, but the tears just... won't stop falling."

"Then cry." the boy replied, reaching out to brush away a tear Tohru missed. "Just because I asked for you to stop, doesn't mean it has to happen right away."

She looked up at him at his touch, unable to say anything in return. The pain she felt in her chest, it came back full force. Tohru lowered her head down, burying her face into her hands while letting out a sob. She cried freely now, without anything stopping her. She thought about Kureno's refusal to see Arisa and Momo's fervent wish to know Momiji. And Kyou's words.

"Thank you Kyou-kun. Thank you..."

[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] Tohru is actually on the list I made of characters I wanted to app here. :P I hope I'll be able to fulfill my goal of playing her here in Som~
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] Still the magical no preggers rule.
